Under the window: Ouro Preto, poema de Elizabeth Bishop<\/h1>\n

The conversations are simple: about food,<\/p>\n

or, \u201cWhen my mother combs my hair, it hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWomen.\u201d \u201cWomen!\u201d Women in red dresses<\/p>\n

and plastic sandals, carrying their almost<\/p>\n

invisible babies \u2013 muffled to the eyes<\/p>\n

in all the heat \u2013 unwrap them, lower them,<\/p>\n

and give them drinks of water lovingly<\/p>\n

from dirty hands, here where there used to be<\/p>\n

a fountain, here where all the world still stops.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The water used to run out of the mouths<\/p>\n

of three green soapstone faces (One face laughed<\/p>\n

and one face cried; the middle one just looked.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Patched up with plaster, they\u2019re in the museum.)<\/p>\n

It runs now from a single iron pipe,<\/p>\n

a strong and ropy stream. \u201cCold.\u201d \u201cCold as ice,\u201d<\/p>\n

all have agreed for several centuries,<\/p>\n

Donkeys agree, and dogs, and the neat little<\/p>\n

bottle-green swallows dare to dip and taste.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here comes that old man with the stick and sack,<\/p>\n

meandering again. He stops and fumbles.<\/p>\n

He finally gets out his enameled mug.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here comes some laundry tied up in a sheet,<\/p>\n

all on its own, three feet above the ground.<\/p>\n

Oh, no \u2013 a small black boy is underneath.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Six donkeys come behind their \u201cgodmother\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2013\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the one who wears a fringe of orange wool<\/p>\n

with wooly balls above her eyes, and bells.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They veer toward the water as a matter<\/p>\n

of course, until the drover\u2019s mare trots up,<\/p>\n

her whiplash-blinded eye on the off side.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A big new truck, Mercedes-Benz, arrives<\/p>\n

to overawe them all. The body\u2019s painted<\/p>\n

with throbbing rosebuds and the bumper says<\/p>\n

HERE I AM FOR WHOM YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING<\/p>\n

The driver and assistant driver wash<\/p>\n

their faces, necks, and chests. They wash their feet,<\/p>\n

their shoes, and put them back again.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, another, older truck grinds up<\/p>\n

in a blue cloud of burning oil. It has<\/p>\n

a syphilitic nose. Nevertheless,<\/p>\n

its gallant driver tells the passerby<\/p>\n

NOT MUCH MONEY BUT IT IS AMUSING.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s been in labor now two days.\u201d \u201cTransistors<\/p>\n

cost much too much.\u201d \u201cFor lunch we took advantage<\/p>\n

of the poor duck the dog decapitated.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How talkative are the seven ages of man,<\/p>\n

how soiled and thirsty!<\/p>\n

Oil has seeped into<\/p>\n

the margins of the ditch of standing water<\/p>\n

and flashes or looks upwards brokenly,<\/p>\n

like bits of mirror \u2013 no, more blue than that:<\/p>\n

like tatters of the Morpho<\/em> butterfly.<\/p>\n
